"only pictures that look as if they had been easily made can convincingly suggest that Beauty is commonplace" Robert Adams

I've been thinking about this quote a lot recently in relation to my kitchen photos. For me setting up a portrait and making it look natural is easy and has almost become second nature because I do it so often. But this new found love of still life is really challenging me. Take the second photo down. How do you make newly washed take-out dishes look like they belong? You should see how many different ways I placed them and still I don't think that it works. I am definitely enjoying the learning process but I have a new found respect for still life photographers that's for sure!

  1. Fist of all let me complimet for your great pictures.
In particular I find this post very interesting, as it confirm to me thet photography is a continuous research and challenge.
Finally I would love to have the same confidence in portrait but unfortunately I'm really bad in photographing people (but even the rest is not that great).
Anyway thanks to your post I have one more reason to keep working on my skills.

  2. Bepperdam,
Thanks for the comment. Really all I think it takes is practice. I used to be terrible at directing people, but the more you do it the easier it gets. You find out what works for you and that can get you going in a certain style. But as you say "photography is a continuous research and challenge". As long as you keep pushing yourself you can only get better. At least I hope so!

  3. Re: the newly washed take-out dishes... Out of the 3 you posted, I had the weakest connection with that photo... For me, it was the overhead angle... The other 2 photos have more interest (for me) because of the variety in the depth of field (because, I think, you were lower down when you photographed them), where the dishes seem flat... Just some thoughts from a "photo school dropout", for what they are worth... Annie.

  4. Annie,
Thanks for your thoughts. I think that you are probably right on about that one. Happy Easter weekend!
