I am going to Ireland today to see my cousin get married, and to continue the project of photographing my grandmother. I will be back in 12 days and will not be blogging in the interim. Have a good 2 weeks everyone!

This summer Montreal, along with other Canadian cities, played host to the FIFA under 20 World Cup. Being big soccer fans Chris and I went to quite a few games but a real highlight for me was the Portugal Gambia game. We live in a Portuguese neighbourhood so we were able to buy our tickets from the local grocery store. The owners there sold approximately 2500 tickets from their little store! At the game most of the crowd was in Portuguese colours and were intensely invested in every move. It was quite a dramatic game with Gambia competing well even though they were down a man for much of the game. Luckily for us, and most of the crowd, Portugal ended up winning the game. Watching the games this summer it was so exciting to see people of all different backgrounds coming out to support their team. Montreal is such a great city for diversity. It's one of the things I like most about this city.

More from that fall day in Vaudreuil.

Monday, November 12, 2007

A few weekends ago Nancy and I went for a drive along the shore of Vaudreuil looking to make pictures. I find nature or landscape photography to be very challenging and so I was happy with the few successful images that came out of that day. I am always better when there is a human element involved like the stone walls in the last 2. Give me a forest of trees to photograph and the images always come out chaotic and nonsensical. It's nice to know one's limits I guess. Since this realization I don't get so upset when having difficulty with nature as a subject. I'll always give it a try all the same!

Photos of Alice on the ferry. The top one is very much inspired by back of the head master Marjaana Kella, a Helsinki photographer whose Reversed Portraits were features in Walrus and Prefix a few years ago. To see more of her work click here.

Unfortunately Chris has been sick recently and so I have had the opportunity to photograph him on the couch a number of times. I hope not to be able to do this any more. Although he is a docile subject right now I would rather that he was feeling better.

The final photos from that great weekend. The top is the birthday boy, my Dad Tom Hutchinson, at 60, or almost. The second is the tepee that 10 of us shared, lit up by the fire we had going inside.
