More photos from the F/start photocamp. This is on a field trip to the gardens across from The Architecture Museum.

Ahhh. At the end of a long day I find blog posting to be so relaxing. I get to look at all my photos and post my favourites! Above are some more from Old Orchard Beach.

This is a very busy week for me, perhaps one of the busiest ever. As a freelancer this if of course good news but I can't help thinking back to relaxing times and the beaches I visited at the end of August. From top to bottom they are: Old Orchard Beach (in Maine), and again OOB, Parlee beach (in New Brunswick, near Moncton), and York beach in Southern Maine. As always you can click on images to see larger views.

Above are some outtakes from my cross photos for Walrus. I put them up now for a few reasons. Firstly Jaspreet Singh, who wrote the story accompanying the photos, emailed me to say that he missed Montreal and enjoyed seeing the photo I took - so these are for you Jaspreet. Secondly I just heard that they will be refurbishing the cross this coming year. I don't know if that means taking it down but I hope not. It's not that I'm religious, quite the opposite in fact. It's just that it's a constant light looking down on us, somehow comforting. Also, after reading Jaspreet's story I like to think that it's a plus sign, and that makes me laugh. I include the dyptich on the bottom because I realize that I shot them on different nights and I am amazed that the angle is so similar. I guess I knew what I wanted.

Of course one of my best and most often used subjects is my wonderful and patient better half Chris. Here are a few recent portraits I took of him.

I realize that in my last post I said "more camping photos" when in fact I hadn't really shown you any. So here are my favourite stills from around the camp fire. Still lifes are my new passion. To see a real pro go to: http://www.marcusnilsson.com/
Nilsson makes all his photos look so effortless when really they are masterpieces. Enjoy!

More camping photos! There is no subject I like more. Here are shots of the beautiful Evita Karasek from a weekend we spent floating down the Rouge River in the Laurentians.

I live in The Mile End neighbourhood of Montreal and there is a large Portuguese contingent here. Religious parades go up my street a few times every summer and then there's the Portuguese festival. Well I don't know what it's really called because I don't speak Portuguese, but basically every August the parking lot in front of the Portuguese church becomes a party ground. There is the pit where you can cook your own meat (top photo), an hour and a half line up for traditional Portuguese bread (I know because I waited in line!), music and much more. Above are some of my impressions of this fun night.

In the second half of August I went on camping trip along the coast of Maine and through the Maritimes. On the way we made sure to stop at my favourite second hand book store: The Chicken Barn. The Chicken Barn is on highway 1 in Maine, just South of Bar Harbor. It is a magical place that is packed with every book you could ever want (well almost). I just got a massive amount of photos back from this trip and had to put these ones from The Chicken Barn up first.

These images of Todd and Evita were taken right after leaving Algonquin Park and our four day canoe-camping trip. We were all a little culture shocked even though we were only gone for a short time. This coming weekend I will be celebrating my Dad's sixtieth birthday by staying in a teepee with my whole family (I vaguely remember that we had to call them conical structures in my anthropology class). Should be interesting! Hopefully some good pictures will come out of it.

Above are photos of my grandmother and a room in her house. She lives in Dublin and last December I was able to spend a week in Ireland. That's when I took these photos. Everyone told me that she wouldn't be photographed willingly but in fact she was very generous with her time. It also gave us the opportunity to look through photos she had taken in her youth. She lived on a farm and her photos of daily life in rural Ireland were quite inspiring. To see more of the photos I took that week, check out the Grandmother link under Projects.

These three images are from this summer's St Viateur Street Festival. The first is a group of friends enjoying street eats, the second is the crowd up on the church steps watching SoCalled perform, and the third is a portrait of Sarah at that perfect time of night when the street lights are just beginning to overpower the sunset.

This summer I once again had the pleasure of teaching photography to teenagers at F/start. F/start is a photo camp founded last year by myself, Guillaume Simoneau and Harlene Weijs. This summer was once again a great success and this time around I worked with Nancy Kendle and Peter Berra. I find teenagers and their diverse and creative approaches to photography so interesting and inspiring. So this year I used some of this energy to photograph them doing their thing: being photographers. Above are a few of the successful images.
