Another pigeon for the weekend.

Today I did an editorial shoot, and just the kind I like. I love the little stories where regular people do great things. And I think that that is also what motivates me in much my personal work. I like making images about the simple, but the simple that I see as extraordinary, finding joy in the everyday. That is probably also why I like pigeons. They are common and yet quite beautiful and I think resilient for being able to survive in harsh urban environments.

After a warm and summery week yesterday brought a winter storm and lots of snow. That's all gone now, but all is not the same. This morning when I looked out my back window to see how the dedicated pigeon family, who was raising and constantly seeing to their young squab (chick), was doing I saw that the youngster was dead. I guess it just couldn't survive the sudden cold temperatures. I can't help but feel that as freakish storms like yesterday's seem to only increase in number wildlife will continue to suffer while we complain about having to take our winter boots out of the closet.

For those of you in NYC I am jealous of the fact that you get to see the first screenings of "The Woodmans" this week. I wish I could see it, I love Francesca's work and the trailer has piqued my interest. (Part of the Tribeca Film Festival, screenings Tues, Wed, and Sat.)

I've been photographing playoff fever and Habs fans before home games this week. Exciting game tonight. Hopefully we will win on Wednesday and make it to the next round!

Chris, same day, different moods (not great scans)

Well I am officially finished the course work portion of my MFA! Now I "just" need to do my thesis project which I will be shooting this summer. This new project involves an exciting location and a new subject. I'll tell you more about it soon enough.

The third is of some tire (maple taffy) which is just about out of season now I think. For those of you who don't know about this wonderful stuff it is basically reduce maple syrup that is poured on snow, and then you come along, roll it up on a popsicle stick and eat it.

The Farmani opening and my few days in New York City were great. Thanks to all who came to the packed opening and showed their support. The show looks amazing (well done Rafael, Paolo and Elle!) and I am so happy to be part of it.

I am very excited to let you all know that two images from this series will be in the "Select Gender" show at Farmani Gallery, opening next Thursday in New York City! Chris and I are coming into town for the event so perhaps I will see some of you there, I am looking forward to it! The show will be up from April 1st to May 22nd. The gallery is located in the Dumbo district and so it is also very exciting that the show will be up during the New York Photo Festival.

Also, in Montreal this week my work will be in the annual Concordia MFA show opening this Friday (from 6 to 9pm). The show will be on from March 26th to April 5th at Espace Artefacto, located at 3520 St Jacques street.

Snow Angels

Today is the first day of FIFA (Festival International du Film sur l'Art, or International Festival of Films on Art). Lots of great films to see. I am especially interested in seeing "Sullivan" about Canadian artist Françoise Sullivan.

Snow, something we haven't seen much of recently

Over the weekend I was in New York City. I went with some of my MFA peers for the purpose of seeing art work and also to drop off some images that will be in an upcoming show. We did a marathon of art viewing including the Armory show, MOMA, the Whitney and the Guggenheim. Overall we agreed that the Guggenheim was the best experience. The Armory seemed to be made to dull your senses through white boxes and too much work to take in. I found it interesting for the simple fact that I was able to see prints in person, prints of work that I often come across on-line, and I must say that a lot of contemporary prints were of a lesser quality than I would have expected. All in all just being in NY was amazing. I had my car towed and the car pound is actually an incredible place where New Yorkers who have to wait for hours to get their cars back chat to strangers and are amazingly cheerful, someone should make a documentary film about that place. I also caught Joel Meyerowitz's talk at Edwynn Houk Gallery. It was great to see those classic images in person and hear one of the great artists from the show speak. Thanks NY!

So Nuit Blanche was great this weekend. The underground tunnels (Art Souterrain) had some really nice work up. I especially recommend Marisa Portolese's work (in zone 6) which will be up till March 13th (as will much of the Art Souterrain).
