This morning I watched Rachel Sussman's Ted Talk about her project "The Oldest Living Things in the World". Sussman has been working on this project for five years and she figures that she has two more years to go. That kind of stamina is impressive, and her commitment to this work is evident in her talk. Well worth seeing, especially for those of you who are interested in where science meets art.

Well I am back from a great summer, and back for good. I hope you had, and are still having, a great one as well! Above are some snaps of the present state of our living room. I took down all of the frames and put up little proofs of my favourite images from my recent trip to Ireland. The last photo is of a collection of my absolute favourites, at least for now. It's great living with these images day in and day out. It very quickly makes it clear what is working and what is not.

I am going to take another hiatus I'm afraid. Summer is busy and I need some relaxation time aswell! So I will be back in late August. Enjoy the last of the hot days!

I've been rereading Joyce's "A portrait of the artist as a young man" recently and have been thoroughly enjoying it. One paragraph at the end of chapter three seemed particularly applicable to my photography of the everyday:

"He sat by the fire in the kitchen, not daring to speak for happiness. Till that moment he had not known how beautiful and peaceful life could be. The green square of paper pinned round the lamp cast down a tender shade. On the dresser was a plate of sausages and white pudding and on the shelf there were eggs."

To me this expresses how the ordinary becomes beautiful when you are euphoric. Something I try to evoke in my photographs.

Portraits of Kanika Gupta and Laura Marie Drudi that I took for this month's issue of Canadian Living Magazine. The portraits were for a story on the Order of Canada Mentorship Program, which they are each involved in.

First off I apologize for my three week hiatus. Since returning from my epic trip to Ireland I have had so much to digest and so many images to look through that I haven't felt up to blogging. But I am back now! The trip was great, and I am really happy with the results. Now I need to sort through it all and make it into a cohesive series. While in Ireland I happened to catch the very beginning of their first ever photo festival (PhotoIreland Festival). My favourite show of the 5 or 6 that I saw was Perry Ogden's "Inspiration" which featured Ogden's work alongside the work of those that inspired him, a great idea and very well done. Since getting back I have become immersed in another summer at F/start which as always is lots of fun. Being surrounded by creative teenagers (as well as my wonderful coworkers) is great.

This month my "Why am I Marrying Him?" work is featured in Vision Magazine (from China). I received the beautiful mag last week and above are some shots of my spread.

In the next two weeks I'll share with you some of my most recent work. This project features my sister, who is a doctor, in the hospital. There are a few doctors in my family and this series is an attempt to understand them and their trade. In this work, called Hospitalis figmentum, my sister plays a doctor character who interacts with her institution and simple medical instruments in mundane and yet slightly off-putting and absurd ways. Hospitalis figmentum references the history of Western medicine, and the cloak of mystery that surrounds it. Through my sister I try to understand medicine and my relationship to it in these images. Above are some of the first, and most straightforward images that we made. More to come in the next few days!

I'm sure this guy is watching lots of World Cup this week. Hopefully I will be too in Dublin!
