Our rambunctious cat Voltron.

Tomorrow evening is the opening of a show that I am part of. It is curated by SVA MFA student Kate Greenberg and is part of her thesis show. I am sorry that I am going to miss it! William Lamson's work is also part of Greenberg's show. I have been a fan of his work for some time and am happy to have work along side his. Two of my "Domestic Interventions" images are in the exhibit. Kate I hope it is a great opening!

This book has been on my mind for the past few months. Tomorrow I am going to Dublin, Ireland with my father to photograph him and the city of his birth in relation to his favourite book: Ulysses. I will be gone for 3 weeks but I have scheduled posts for that time so it will seem as though I am blogging more than ever. See you in July!

More Habs fans from 2010 playoffs.

A few things from the internet:

I am selling a print through Feature Shoot!

I answered a few questions on why I blog for Rappoteurs Photo. See my answers, and those of a few other interesting Canadian photo bloggers here (only in french).

Montreal's hockey season may be over but I still have many more Habs fans portraits to share with you.

Habs fans couples.

I was down there tonight photographing fans before the game, great atmosphere, hopefully they can make it happen tonight.

More Habs fans from this season's playoffs. Tough game to watch last night. The consolation is knowing that half the city and all of the Habs fans that I've photographed are going through the same highs and lows as me. My favourite Habs song here.

Some Habs fans from this 2010 playoff season, whom I photographed outside the arena before home games.

Exciting hockey game last night. I can tell you that this guy was not sleeping during the game. And now this means more Habs fans shooting this season, and I'm sure they'll only get crazier as time goes on. I've been shooting at the past few home games and will get my film back this weekend so I'll have lots of Habs fans work to show you next week.

Two things you should know about:
Jessica Eaton opening tonight at Push Gallery here in Montreal.

Select Gender Artist Panel discussion at Farmani Gallery this Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately I won't be able to be in New York to participate in this or go to all of the New York Photo Festival events. New Yorkers enjoy this crazy weekend!

Our fish Dostoyevsky was very sick. We heard that the most humane way to let him go was through freezing, so that is what we did.

So I had a busy few days in Toronto, visiting as many Contact shows as I could. One of the first things I did was go to the Alec Soth talk. Although Soth does not seem to have the most optimistic view of the future of photography, the talk itself was very interesting (Soth will be addressing where he thinks photography might be going in his October 8th talk as part of the Flash Forward Festival in Toronto). Getting insight into the personal motives behind his work was really interesting and made the talk worth it for me. He definitely seems to be a photographer in transition: moving away from his large format perspective and working with digital snapshots, video, and sound, all with the goal of storytelling (there was an interesting question about the difference between storytelling and documentary at the end of the talk). I must say that I am still attached to his older work and the rawness of his slideshows does not yet appeal to me. With his older series of still images we were allowed more room to make up our own stories, now Soth tells us what the story is and leads us on strange and unpredictable adventures.

A fun photo from last summer since it finally feels like summer here.

I am going to Toronto tomorrow to check out all that is Contact. I'll let you know what I liked and disliked next week.

Another pigeon for the weekend.

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Today I did an editorial shoot, and just the kind I like. I love the little stories where regular people do great things. And I think that that is also what motivates me in much my personal work. I like making images about the simple, but the simple that I see as extraordinary, finding joy in the everyday. That is probably also why I like pigeons. They are common and yet quite beautiful and I think resilient for being able to survive in harsh urban environments.

After a warm and summery week yesterday brought a winter storm and lots of snow. That's all gone now, but all is not the same. This morning when I looked out my back window to see how the dedicated pigeon family, who was raising and constantly seeing to their young squab (chick), was doing I saw that the youngster was dead. I guess it just couldn't survive the sudden cold temperatures. I can't help but feel that as freakish storms like yesterday's seem to only increase in number wildlife will continue to suffer while we complain about having to take our winter boots out of the closet.

Some stills from the cottage.

For those of you in NYC I am jealous of the fact that you get to see the first screenings of "The Woodmans" this week. I wish I could see it, I love Francesca's work and the trailer has piqued my interest. (Part of the Tribeca Film Festival, screenings Tues, Wed, and Sat.)

I've been photographing playoff fever and Habs fans before home games this week. Exciting game tonight. Hopefully we will win on Wednesday and make it to the next round!

Chris, same day, different moods (not great scans)

Well I am officially finished the course work portion of my MFA! Now I "just" need to do my thesis project which I will be shooting this summer. This new project involves an exciting location and a new subject. I'll tell you more about it soon enough.

Two still life images from the country.

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

3 new kitchen counter images.

The third is of some tire (maple taffy) which is just about out of season now I think. For those of you who don't know about this wonderful stuff it is basically reduce maple syrup that is poured on snow, and then you come along, roll it up on a popsicle stick and eat it.

This week on offer in Montreal:

Collision 6 at the Parisian Laundry (work from Concordia and UQAM graduating MFA students), opening on Friday

right around the corner and also opening on Friday: Index at Jean-Brillant, the Concordia photo undergrads show

And from Thursday to Sunday of this week: Paper 10 at the BlackWatch, the Contemporary Art Fair of Works on Paper

The last of the Entrelacs images

A few blog reviews of the "Select Gender" show (from a visitor to the show, an artist whose work is in the show, and from one of the show's curators): 1, 2, 3.

And some images from the opening here.

More from the small town of Entrelacs.

The Farmani opening and my few days in New York City were great. Thanks to all who came to the packed opening and showed their support. The show looks amazing (well done Rafael, Paolo and Elle!) and I am so happy to be part of it.
